EHCS Cross Country Begins!

East Hill Christian began their Cross Country season this past Saturday! The team of five girls and four boys met at Sims Middle School track in Pace for the Patriot Invitational.  The girls ran first, a total of 5k. Then the boys ran their race.

One of the new members to the team this year, Teya Lonquist, said, ” I had a really great time. I love to run. I think it was fun to actually be in a race instead of just practice. I got to find out how well I did, and how well I did compared to others in the race. The track was a bit boring, but it was sprinkling, which made the run much more pleasant. I enjoyed the overall experience of the whole thing. I cannot wait to do it again!”

An interview with C.J. Kennemore

How was your first race of the season?
CJ: It was pretty hot and tiring because you run around three times.

How did you feel after crossing the finish line?
CJ: I felt accomplished.

Did you achieve the goal you set for yourself?
CJ: I did better than I had expected. I got 27 minutes. I beat my goal I had set for myself.

What did you expect before the race?
CJ: I did not expect the a race to be a track.

Next goal for a race?
CJ: I would really like to finish a race without stopping.

What experience did you gain by running with the EHCS Cross Country team?
CJ: It’s cool to be running for yourself and a team! I feel like I’m on an Olympic team. I think that being on the Cross Country team helps me gain endurance for other sports.

An Interview with Mr. Smith

Today we interviewed Mr. Drayton Smith, the school’s new P.E. teacher and athletic director. Our first question that we asked him was: “Why did you decide to come to East Hill Christian School?” He then laughed and told us it would be a long story. He shared with us that he has been keeping an eye out for an East Hill job opening. He told us that he got an email one day from a website that notifies you when job openings come up, and that East Hill had one open for exactly what he was qualified for! He said from then on, that it was just like God laid it on his heart.

Our next question that we had prepared for him, was “Do you enjoy teaching at East Hill so far, and is it what you thought it would be?” His answer to that was, “It was nothing like I thought it would be! But it is a great school, and I love it so far. I did not think that I would be teaching P.E. all day, so that was a surprise, but it is fun.” He really has some great goals for East Hill this year.

Our next question was: “What are your goals for East Hill now that you are the athletic director?” He gave it a few seconds, then smiled and replied with “My main goal is to see our athletic program grow and strengthen, and I really want to keep things in line and organized throughout the seasons.” He wants to play as many games as possible, without it affecting schoolwork or cutting out our God time. He is so excited to start playing games because he believes that now that we are playing public schools, if we do good, people may see our full potential, and want to come to East Hill. Recruiting more people for our sports is another goal of his.

I believe that his main goal that he put the most emphasis on was, “doing everything for the glory of God, and showing people our Christ-like attitudes through the way that we represent ourselves, and play sports.” He went on to talk about our newest accomplishment! He revealed that we are now going to play public schools, which gives us a chance to share the word with others and portray our Christ-like attitudes. Mr. Smith has quite a bit of experience with sports, and is more than excited to be our new athletic director, and we are ecstatic as well! — Emma, Edward, and Scooter

Baseball Finishes 3rd in PCC

Junior Jack Gross hit a base-clearing triple in the top of the 7th inning to propel the Eagles past Santa Rosa Christian Academy in the consolation game during the PCC Final Four baseball tournament.  Going into the 7th inning, the score had remained 2 – 2 with both teams battling at the plate.  Ben Glodfelter pitched 3 innings giving up 2 unearned runs and striking out 6.  Jacob Kelly came in to pitch in the 4th inning in relief.  He struck out 7 and gave up 1 unearned run in the 7th.

The Eagles loss to Emmanual Christian on Friday put them in the consolation game against Santa Rosa. Ed Dominey dominated at the plate during the Final Four tournament batting .750 and walking 3 times.  Saturday’s matchup was the Eagles’ last game.  The spring banquet to celebrate the season is to be held on Thursday, May 10th.

Eagles Baseball Advances to PCC Final Four

The Eagles baseball team fell short on Saturday afternoon losing the West Region Championship Game.  The team still advances to the PCC Final Four tournament to be held Friday and Saturday (May 4th and 5th) in Dothan, AL.  The Eagles will play Emmanual Christian School at 4 p.m. on Friday.

The Eagles are now 6 – 4 on the season, an accomplishment beyond expectations.  With only two returning starters, many new players, including home-schoolers Ben Glodfelter and John Mobley, stepped up to the plate.  Going into Saturday’s game, Glodfelter, Mobley and Chris Wood, another newcomer, were all batting over .300.  Wood is the only senior on the team, so expectations for next year are already running high.

Following the game, Glodfelter and sophomore Jacob Kelly each received all-conference awards just after the team accepted the West Conference Runner-up trophy.
